Why I joined Superpower

A letter on a week in the NICU, a decade in digital health, and what happens after the blood draw.

I am from Sydney and have been in the US for almost five years. I started in private equity, then spent a decade in digital health as founder and CEO of Perx Health, a care program for people with complex chronic conditions. We started in Australia, and in 2022 I moved to New York to bring the model here. We exited earlier this year, and I am still on the board.

Last year, my reason for doing any of this changed with the arrival of my daughter, Mila. Her first week was spent in the NICU, and for a while nobody could tell us exactly what was wrong. Most nights it was just me sitting with her until the doctors made their last round, pulling her numbers from the portal and trying to make sense of them. I even built my own genuinely terrible tool to read her labs. It failed, but it captured something I have not shaken since: you advocate for someone far better when you actually understand their data.

That week changed how I thought about my own health too. I had spent my twenties assuming I could exercise my way to healthy: marathons, half-Ironmans, years of rugby, without ever really understanding what was going on underneath. Having a child made figuring it out later feel like a bad plan.

What got me about Superpower was not the blood draw. It was everything that happens after it. After a decade spent trying to get patients to follow a plan, a team obsessed with making the plan worth following felt like the obvious next chapter.

My friends find it funny that I joined a blood testing company given I have had a shaking, vasovagal reaction to almost every draw since childhood. Three Superpower draws in, I have been completely fine.
