I knew about Superpower for years before I joined. I had heard about the ambition. What I had not seen, until I started meeting the team, was the focus underneath it.

I knew I wanted in once I understood how seriously everyone took the mission. Building a new health system cannot be a marketing line. It has to be the thing everyone is actually doing every day.

In my first week I had intros with people from completely different backgrounds. One call stayed with me, with a former primary care doctor who left his practice to run our clinical strategy. We got talking about our own experiences of the healthcare system.

I felt slightly silly bringing it up, but I told him I have had unexplained chest pain for more than a decade. Cardiologists, pulmonologists, x-rays, CT scans, hour-long ECGs on a treadmill. Dead end after dead end. Nobody ever found anything, and as it got worse I changed how I lived around the fear of it.

I should have known that a clinician willing to join Superpower would want to get to the bottom of it. We went from talking about software to talking about symptoms, and ended the call on an open note. Two hours later a Slack message arrived. That was the first time I had a considered opinion with a longer horizon than a fifteen minute appointment, and it moved me forward. I want that within reach of as many people as possible, and this is the place to do it.
