Why I joined Superpower

A letter on falling into benefits consulting by accident, and the questions it left behind.

Nobody grows up dreaming of employee benefits consulting, and I certainly did not. A friend dragged me to a career fair I had almost skipped, I talked to a recruiter from Mercer, and a few interviews later I had a job. That is the whole origin story. No grand plan.

The accident turned out well, because it put me in the evaluator's seat for years. I watched how much money and energy employers pour into healthcare only after something has already gone wrong, and it gnawed at me.

A few of my clients kept pulling me into the conversations they were having with health tech companies. Sitting across from those founders, I was struck by how genuinely fired up they were. Not performative. They could point at a real person whose life had changed because of what they built. I had not known you could be that invested in your own company's mission. Honestly, I was jealous. So I moved to the vendor side, and spent the years since at Spring Health, Found and Brightside.

The thread running through all of it is the thing that has actually kept me up at night. We are good at reacting to health problems and bad at catching them early. How am I meant to know what to ask my doctor, or what to test for, when I keep being told I am fine? Superpower is that question attacked head on instead of from the edges.

Outside work I am in the gym or a Pilates class most days. Most people do not guess that I was a competitive platform and springboard diver, which is what got me into college. I live in Venice Beach with my husband and our two dogs.
