Method: Shotgun metagenomic sequencing (CLIA 21D2062464); not cleared or approved by the FDA. Results reflect relative microbial abundance for wellness education purposes. Not intended to diagnose or treat disease and not a substitute for clinical consultation. Microbial associations are based on emerging scientific research and may change over time.
A derived biomarker is a value that is calculated from other directly measured biomarkers rather than being measured directly in the lab.
Key benefits of Cryptosporidium testing
- Cryptosporidium waterborne parasite monitoring
- immune status and water quality assessment
What is Cryptosporidium?
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite and leading waterborne pathogen in the US, causing cryptosporidiosis - a diarrheal illness transmitted through contaminated water and food. Detection is by shotgun metagenomic sequencing of stool.
Why is Cryptosporidium important?
Cryptosporidiosis is particularly severe in immunocompromised individuals. In immunocompetent adults it is typically self-limiting. Detection via microbiome testing may identify subclinical infections or recent water exposure events. Clinical correlation is warranted.
What insights will I get?
Any detection of Cryptosporidium is clinically significant. Discuss your results promptly with your personal clinician, particularly if you have had recent gastrointestinal symptoms or exposure to contaminated water sources. The Superpower care team is available on demand to help you understand your results and prepare questions for your clinician.
