Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) is the average amount of hemoglobin contained in each red blood cell. Hemoglobin is the iron-bearing protein that binds oxygen in the lungs and releases it to tissues. Red blood cells are formed in the bone marrow, where hemoglobin is packed into them as they mature. MCH is reported as part of a routine complete blood count (CBC), summarizing, across millions of cells, how much hemoglobin an individual red cell carries on average.

The hemoglobin content per cell sets the oxygen-carrying capacity of that cell.
