A letter on design as a way to help, two years as Superpower's client, and building the proactive version of care.
I love beauty and I love helping people. Design is the one medium that lets me do both, and I have been chasing it since I taught myself to draw off YouTube as a kid. Most of the times I have grown the most came from being somewhere unfamiliar and staying interested anyway. That is roughly how I ended up working closely with engineers and getting properly into the code.
Three years ago I was at an agency called Daybreak, where Superpower was my client. I was the primary product designer here for the better part of two years, working closely with the founders. The habits I picked up in that time stuck without me really trying. Whole foods, moving my body more, better everything at home. I lost fifteen pounds and never once felt like I was limiting my life.
I care that people are healthy because healthy people make better decisions, stay more optimistic, and are kinder to each other. I would rather help someone get ahead of a problem than react to one. I am from Canada, where the care is free and the wait is long enough that I have sat out plenty of symptoms until they faded and the appointment stopped mattering. This is my way of shortening that for someone else.
Outside work I keep things very simple. I can eat steamed sweet potatoes and boiled chicken for months. I wear the same outfit most weeks. Once the basics are settled I have room to think about the things that actually matter, like a design decision. I also put miso in my coffee, which is better than it sounds.
