About the mold toxins test

Mycotoxins are chemical byproducts, including aflatoxins, trichothecenes, ochratoxins, and other toxic compounds such as gliotoxin and zearalenone, produced by certain mold species and excreted in urine after exposure. This test measures their presence directly, which makes it different from a mold allergy test: it assesses toxin load, not your immune system's response. The analysis uses LC-MS/MS (liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry), a technique that detects these compounds at parts-per-trillion sensitivity, significantly more precise than ELISA-based antibody tests. Samples are processed by Mosaic Diagnostics, a CLIA- and CAP-accredited laboratory. From a single first-morning urine sample, you learn which specific mycotoxins are present and at what levels.

Where mold toxin exposure comes from

Mold toxin exposure does not require a visible mold problem or a flooded home. It generally falls into two categories. Environmental exposure happens through water-damaged buildings, damp basements, bathrooms, and HVAC systems, where molds like Stachybotrys ("black mold"), Aspergillus, and Chaetomium can grow. Dietary exposure is just as common and far less obvious: ochratoxin A is frequently found in coffee, dried fruit, grapes, and grains, while aflatoxins turn up in peanuts, corn, and tree nuts. Because many of these foods are everyday staples, exposure can occur gradually and without any obvious source. That's why this panel covers both environmental and food-associated toxins rather than focusing on water damage alone.

Mycotoxin exposure can present in ways that overlap with many other conditions, which is one reason it is often missed on standard blood panels. The following patterns, drawn from bloodwork and from clinical symptoms, are commonly reported alongside mold toxin exposure.

What this test measures

This test screens for 11 mycotoxins (including aflatoxins, trichothecenes, ochratoxins, and other toxic compounds such as gliotoxin and zearalenone) using LC-MS/MS technology, which detects these compounds at parts-per-trillion sensitivity. Results are creatinine-corrected to account for hydration variation, which improves accuracy. For each toxin, your report shows whether it was detected and, where present, at what concentration. This is not a mold allergy test

These two tests measure entirely different things. An IgE mold allergy test measures your immune system's antibody response to mold proteins: it detects sensitivity, not toxin exposure. A mycotoxin test measures the chemical toxins mold produces, directly in your urine, regardless of whether your immune system reacts to them. That distinction matters: someone can have a negative allergy test and still carry a meaningful mycotoxin burden, and the reverse is also true. The two are complementary rather than redundant. If you've already had a mold allergy test, this panel still answers a different question: what toxins are actually present.
