Key benefits of Phenylglyoxylic Acid (PGO) testing

  • Styrene and ethylbenzene exposure tracking
  • plastics and indoor air chemical assessment
  • inhalation exposure monitoring

What is Phenylglyoxylic Acid (PGO)?

PGO is a urinary metabolite of both styrene and ethylbenzene - volatile organic compounds present in polystyrene plastics, cigarette smoke, gasoline, and some building materials. Measured via LC-MS/MS with creatinine correction.

Why is Phenylglyoxylic Acid (PGO) important?

Styrene and ethylbenzene are classified as possible carcinogens at high exposures (IARC Group 2B). Urinary PGO reflects personal biological exposure - not an estimated air-level - making it a more individual measure of your styrene and ethylbenzene burden.

What insights will I get?

Your PGO level may reflect exposure to polystyrene food containers, cigarette smoke, indoor air, or fuel-related environments. Reducing use of polystyrene food packaging and avoiding tobacco smoke environments may be reflected in follow-up results.

Method: LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry) with creatinine normalization by Jaffe Reaction (CLIA 17D0919496); not cleared or approved by the FDA. Results reported in µg/g creatinine. Not a stand-alone diagnosis; should be interpreted in clinical context.
