Key benefits of Oxybenzone (OBZ) testing

  • Chemical sunscreen exposure tracking
  • UV filter absorption assessment
  • hormone-relevant personal care chemical monitoring

What is Oxybenzone (OBZ)?

Oxybenzone (benzophenone-3) is a UV-absorbing chemical used in chemical sunscreens, SPF lip products, and some cosmetics with sun protection. It is absorbed through skin and excreted in urine. Measured via LC-MS/MS.

Why is Oxybenzone (OBZ) important?

Oxybenzone is among the most widely detected environmental chemicals in human urine. Research has raised questions about its potential hormonal activity. Skin absorption can be substantial with daily chemical sunscreen use, making urinary measurement a practical personal exposure indicator.

What insights will I get?

Your oxybenzone level may reflect the frequency of chemical sunscreen use, including aerosol sprays, SPF lip products, and sun-protective cosmetics. Elevated levels may inform a decision to switch to mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are not significantly absorbed systemically.

Method: LC-MS/MS (Liquid Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry) with creatinine normalization by Jaffe Reaction (CLIA 17D0919496); not cleared or approved by the FDA. Results reported in µg/g creatinine. Not a stand-alone diagnosis; should be interpreted in clinical context.
