Key benefits of Gadolinium (Gd) testing

  • Gadolinium MRI contrast agent retention tracking
  • post-MRI exposure assessment

What is Gadolinium (Gd)?

Gadolinium is a rare earth metal used as a contrast agent in MRI procedures. Urinary gadolinium primarily reflects prior MRI contrast administration. While most gadolinium is excreted within 24 hours in normal kidney function, some retention may occur with repeated MRI contrast exposure. Measured via ICP-MS.

Why is Gadolinium (Gd) important?

Gadolinium retention has been documented in bone and brain tissue following repeated MRI contrast administration, raising questions about long-term effects that are an active area of research. Monitoring urinary gadolinium may be relevant for individuals who have undergone multiple contrast-enhanced MRI procedures.

What insights will I get?

Your gadolinium level may reflect prior MRI contrast administration. Elevated levels may indicate recent or repeated MRI contrast exposure. If you have had multiple contrast-enhanced MRI procedures, discuss this finding with your care team.

Method: ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) with creatinine normalization by Jaffe Reaction (CLIA 14D0646470); not cleared or approved by the FDA. Results in µg/g creatinine; reference intervals based on NHANES population data under non-provoked conditions. Not a stand-alone diagnosis; should be interpreted in clinical context.
